Weekend Wisdom - Labor Day Weekend 2024

Among other things, Labor Day weekend is often associated with the end of summer vacations, return to school, and the start of fall sports. For our parishes, this weekend also marks a farewell to Fr. Josuva and a new beginning for Fr. Micheal who will be serving at St. Francis Xavier Parish. We extend a warm welcome to Fr. Micheal and a heartfelt thank you Fr. Josuva!

Beginning this weekend, we also return to the Gospel of Mark after spending the last five weekends reflecting on the awesome “Bread of Life Discourse” (John – Chapter 6). During this time of Eucharistic Revival, we are all called to continue to reflect on the mystery of Jesus fully present in the Eucharist. His presence is real, true, and substantial.

I also find myself continuing to reflect on the words of Joshua in the first reading last Sunday as he stood before God and all of the Israelites after they finally arrived in the Promised Land. Joshua challenged the people with the statement…“decide today whom you will serve." Then Joshua boldly proclaimed one of my favorite lines from the Old Testament…“As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD." (Perhaps you already have this wonderful scripture passage displayed somewhere in your home!)

Part of my morning prayer routine includes praying with “Living Faith - Daily Catholic Devotions.” https://www.livingfaith.com

Sister Melannie Svoboda, SND reflected on Joshua 24:15 by recalling a priest friend of hers whose email address began with “As4me”. Sr. Melannie suggested that we could use these three little words to reflect on choices we make in our lives… ways to grow in faith and in virtue. Remember, there is great power in creating and repeating positive daily affirmations!

In addition to your choice to serve the Lord, you could add some affirmations of your own. Here are a few suggestions to consider…

  • As4me, I will spend at least "xx" minutes each day in prayer.

  • As4me, I choose to use kind words with others.

  • As4me, I will be grateful for all the blessings that God has given me.

  • As4me, I will strive to see Jesus in everyone I meet.

This is a wonderful time of year for new routines and new beginnings. What bold choices would you like to make? As for me…

May God bless you and your family!

Deacon Mark
