Weekend Wisdom - September 21st & 22nd, 2024
At the 10:00am Mass on Sunday, catechists and volunteers were called forth to be commissioned for their ministry work in our Discipleship Formation program. By virtue of Baptism, they are witnesses to the Gospel and help our youth find a passion for the Catholic faith. Commissioning is one way we recognize them for the generosity of their time and talents. How appropriate since this weekend’s Gospel reading is taken from Mk 9:30-37.
As we reflect on the Gospel reading, we are reminded of the disciples' argument on the road to Capernaum. In response, Jesus imparts a profound lesson, "Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all." This teaching underscores that true greatness is not found in power, fame, wealth, or influence, but in humility, faithfulness, and service.
The disciples are called to be servants, to prioritize others' needs, and to act with a humble and compassionate heart. Continuing the Gospel narrative, Jesus takes a child into His arms and proclaims, "Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me." This act of embracing a child, who at that time held little status and was entirely dependent on others, is a powerful reminder for us. Like children, the disciples must be vulnerable and completely dependent on God, finding reassurance and support in His care.
Through their service of mentoring and supporting our program’s youth and their parents, our catechists and volunteers emulate Jesus’ example of selfless service. Embracing a childlike disposition of trust and dependence, they also demonstrate humility in this selfless service. Today, we take to thank our catechists and volunteers for following in the footsteps of Jesus.
