Weekend Wisdom - May 12th, 2024

The Ascension is the last time the disciples, and each one of us, heard words from Jesus until He comes again. Can you imagine what it must have been to consider and deliver those words? He was God so He knew they were the right words, but the human side of him must have been wondering how those words would impact his followers: what would we hear and what would we do with it?

Jesus said to his disciples: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15)

What does that look like? Surely I am not meant to wander the Middle East and Mediterranean with a cloak and staff telling people of the love and hope that comes from a life with Jesus, am I? The apostle Paul (who was called to walk in such a manner) in his letter to the Ephesians, has some very clear instructions for how to live Jesus’ great commission: “…live in a manner worthy of the call you have received, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love…” (Ephesians 4:1-2)

There’s that “love” word again. If you were at First Communion Masses with Fr. Mike last weekend, you’ll remember we heard Jesus’ speak the word love nine times. And when asked how the First Communicants knew their parents loved them, one small voice said, “Because they are here with us today.” Stop for a moment and bring to mind someone who has been there for you – to celebrate or to share in your struggles.

That was God loving you. And God is even more faithful to you than those people.

The Gospel goes on to say, “But they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs.” (Mark 15:20) We are able to love others because God loves us and God’s faithfulness is in us.

Show up – be there – with humility, gentleness, and the patience to bear the needs of those around you with love. We must keep trying because it is through us that people can know the love and hope of Jesus, our savior. Friends, don’t be afraid to go forth and let the Lord love through you and confirm God’s promises and presence with your hands and feet. You have the Word, the Eucharist and the faith community around you to help you do it.

There is a great line that I can hear my teenage son singing, “Down on my knees that’s where I learned to stand. Oh Lord, I can’t even walk without you holding my hand.” God’s holding your hand, go and tell the world!
