Year of Ministries: Ministry of Ushers/Hospitality
December Featured Ministry - Ushers
The role of usher is so important to the sense of welcome and hospitality at our parishes; it’s at the core of who we are as Christians. When people walk through the door and have an usher to welcome them, guide them through the sacred space, and make sure they are comfortable, their worship and participation is stronger.
Michelle Smits has been an usher at St. Mary Catholic Church for 15 years and joined when the group was shorthanded. "I find greeting people and welcoming them to our parish as the most enjoyable aspect of being an usher," Smits said. "People look to us to answer any questions they might have. Whether it is their first time and they are not familiar with the building, or if they are bringing in something for the gift tree and not knowing where it goes, or looking for a quiet area for the crying baby; we help to find the best answer for their needs. We maintain peace and order quietly," she adds.
Her advice to parishioners who are "on the fence" about getting involved? "Don’t be afraid, give it a try. No special talents, like public speaking, are needed - just someone willing to help make a difference. We are asked to be Jesus’ hands and feet, ushering is a great opportunity," Smits said.
For their convenience, there is a regular usher schedule according to individual availability. As a new usher you will receive a short on-the-job training. Ushers can be men or women over the age of 16, or younger than 16 years of age if volunteering with a parent who is an usher. Please consider joining this important ministry at our parishes.
You will find more information about the Usher ministry and a sign-up sheet, as well as information on all the other parish ministries, in the new ministry corner in the Gathering Area.
